OmniLytics Reports that FDA Amends Food Additive Regulations to Allow for Bacteriophage Use

Use of Bacteriophage for Listeria on Ready-to-Eat Meat and Poultry.

Salt Lake City — (August 18, 2006) OmniLytics reports that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today posted a final rule in the Federal Register amending the food additive regulations to provide for the safe use of a bacteriophage preparation on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products as an antimicrobial agent against Listeria monocytogenes.

"The FDA’s action amending the regulations approving the use of bacteriophage as a food additive continues to validate the use of bacteriophage as a natural, safe and effective antimicrobial treatment and the broad range of treatment opportunities. Harmful bacteria cause significant losses to meat and poultry producing and packing companies, in addition to potential illness for consumers. The use of a safe bacteriophage solution will provide greater assurance to both the producer and the consumer that bacterial contamination has been removed and that no toxic residues have been left on the food.

Now this safe alternative to harmful additives can be leveraged in the ready-to-eat meat and poultry market.
